Back with a Bang

It's time to come out of hiding....

I've been away from my blog for FAR too long but as of recent I've read several articles and posts that haven't been setting right with me. {it's a southern expression, you'll get used to it}

Before I get into my rant, I would like to update everyone on my sweet little munchkin... She's just amazing and she blesses me every day. She's 9 months old and 16.5 lbs. Her blue eyes light up when she sees her daddy and her dish water blonde hair is getting thick up top.

We as women, not as mommies or wives or whatever your situation may be, need to be more supportive of each other. It's come to my attention (the internet is a powerful thing, y'all) that there are "mommy bullies" out there. That's not cool ladies. I'm going to lose friends over this but it needs to be said: do not judge me or anyone else for feeding their child formula. Unless you are a pediatrician or a lactation nurse, you have zero authority on what is best for my child. I, along with many other women, lost my ability to breast feed while my daughter was in the NICU. It may be natural but sometimes nature doesn't always work out, or I would have been able to carry McKenna full term and have a "normal" birthing experience. Don't judge me for my c-section scar, I had no choice. We should be supporting each other's decisions, not making each other feel like mommy poo. I would never ever judge someone for breast feeding so don't judge me for my inability to.

I haven't written in months and I decided to come back with a bang but lately I've seen WAY too many articles about women feeling ostracized for things that are sometimes out of their control. So please, support each other, don't turn your nose up at me until you know my story.

ABC's of me!

So I’m a loser today and feeling kind of narcissistic so I decided to pull out one of these cheesy myspace quizzes. It was kind of fun but some of these questions were kind of dumb… Oh well. Before you dive into the ABC’s of me… here’s a few pics of my sweet girl from yesterday.

A. Age: I’m a happy 26 with a couple laugh lines but no crow’s feet.

B. Bed size: Queen. I love my bed.

C. Chore you hate:  Ha! I’m no good at chores. Seriously, ask my husband. He would probably just rather that I stay away from things LOL

D. Dogs: um no. I’m not a dog person. Yeah? So what? I’m a cat person. That’s it… I’m going to be a cat lady.

E. Essential start to your day: Spark, mascara, and hairspray.

F. Favorite color: Green

G. Gold or Silver: White gold.

H. Height: Hobbit size at 5’1

I. Instruments you play: I couldn’t even play the recorder in elementary school correctly so I gave up on my dream of being able to tell a “this one time at band camp,” story but I do have several of “this one time at thespian conference…” and “this one time on the forensic bus…” stories.

J. Job Title: In-Charge… No really, that’s what my position is called. I’m an In-charge.

K. Kids: One daughter and that’s it. I’m done.

L. Live:  a noble life.

M. Married:  Since 05/2009--- I took his name and sanity.

N. Nicknames: KB, KBD

O. Overnight hospital stays: 2. Both concerning the birth of my daughter. First there was a 24 hour observation that turned into a 10 day stay. I was plotting my escape route when they finally let me go home for Christmas. The next was 20 days later when my doctor thought I was having normal pregnancy pains but my blood work told a different story. My daughter was c-sected out of me 4 hours later.

P. Pet peeve: Being on time and being kind to people.

Q. Quote: Really? I have too many to count but probably that sums me up is “Be so good they can’t ignore you.”

R. Righty or Lefty: I’m pretty sure this is a double entendre, but right. Either way you take this... right.

S. Siblings:  1 sister that is 10 years younger.

T. Time you wake up: 4am… Thank the Lord for Spark.

U. University attended:  Austin Peay… but I was asked to not come back without a wad of cash. That’s a different story for a different day. Ha

V. Vegetables you dislike:  Celery. Bah. Celery.

W. What makes you run late: My love of sleep.

X. X-rays you've had: I can’t think of any.

Y. Yummy food: I love Chinese but the sodium levels in it do not set well with my BP so I generally only get it like once a month.

Z. Zoo animal favorite: I hate the zoo. Animal kingdom at Disney World was hell for me and I’m sure that one day McKenna will just have to go. Sigh.

Christmas in June!!!

Christmas in June…. I always enjoy when happy things show up on my door step… Thanks FedEx!

(Short fangirl happy dance)
My energy just arrived and I couldn’t be happier. When you have to wake up at 4am, yes, you heard right..4am, for work, you need all the energy you can get!
Anywho, besides being extremely giddy for my Spark, I also had a day of beauty. I sooooo needed this.  I’m pretty sure my roots were going to jump out of my head if I didn’t get them taken care of.
My glamor technician, Jess, is a genius. Let me know if you need a glamor genius, I'll get y'all in touch!!

My beautiful little bug was 5 months old yesterday! When I think about the last 5 months and what it took to get her home with us, I am even more thankful for her. It breaks my heart when I hear about so many premature babies, I think back to when that was McKenna and it’s hard. I’ve never experienced anything more rewarding and wonderful than motherhood. I never used to cry this much, I think this grinch’s heart has grown 2 sizes. She’s my miracle, my love and my best friend. When I’m having a bad day, I know that just seeing her will make me feel like a brand new person.  I feel so sorry for Winston when she gets old enough to enjoy shopping with me.
My random new blender bottle. I feel like I don't even use real cups anymore!!
This blog is such a blessing for me; it gives me an opportunity to communicate with complete strangers and past friends who I haven’t seen in so long. You ladies are so inspirational and I love hearing from y’all!

A New Adventure

What a relaxing weekend…. Last week was a bit of a rough one and I’m so excited to be in a new week.

I got some much needed time with my sweet girl and was also able to catch up on my sleep, which is a rare thing. I tried some new recipes and found a new exciting snack!

Over the past couple of months my life has changed in so many ways, some changes I’ve welcomed with open arms and some have happened without me even noticing. Today is just a bunch of rambles; I haven’t gotten my head back together from the weekend yet… I even did my makeup in the parking lot of my office this morning… sigh.
After a rounding day of shopping on Friday with moms and little sister, I was ready to take it easy on Saturday so I ran to Walmart--- you know, the place where dreams are crushed, and made it out in 30 minutes. I attempted my first pinterest project Saturday and I have to say that it turned out better than I thought.
Overnight Oats.  ½ cup of Oatmeal. ½ cup of Vanilla Almond Milk. Dash of cinnamon.  Combine all into mason jars and refrigerate overnight. I sliced a banana on the top and it was filling, healthy, and the taste was great!

I only did 3 jars of overnight oats because I didn’t want to make a lot and have it turn out terrible but I had 9 jars left out of the pallet of 12 that I bought so I decided to try out another pinterest project—Salad in a jar. Dressing on bottom, and whatever else you’d like to add. It’s supposed to keep your lettuce fresh and not soggy…. I brought one to add to my lunch today so we’ll see.
Two moments of excitement today…. I got a new water bottle – If you drink a boat ton of water, you totally get why this is exciting. Anddddd…. I’m excited to announce that I have decided to become an advocare distributor.

Advocare has been changing my life and giving me more energy than ever before. I’m sure that most of you have your own ways and own programs that you follow; Advocare is just what is working for me. I’m excited to start this new adventure… I’ve never done anything like this before so here goes nothing!

Because you're amazing

Today there is no product pushing, no before and after pics, and no baby pictures. Today is about you, all of you and me.
Let me start by saying that I’ve never thought that there is anything wrong with me, I like who I am and who I’ve become. Sure, I need to lose weight but I’m doing it for me and my health. Not for vanity or to please anyone. I’ve gotten very lucky in life to have a husband who loves me, a beautiful daughter, a supportive family and amazing friends along the way.
Recently I’ve noticed a lot of fat “shamming,” I’m not afraid to laugh at myself and make little jokes but in no way am I serious. We are all amazing. Please be proud of who you are.
Sure, I’ve let myself go a little but I’m not ashamed. I’m proud that I could carry a child as long as I did. I’m proud that my body was able to bounce back after going through such a traumatic experience and I’m proud that I’ve gathered the strength to come back even stronger than before.
I want all of you to not be down on yourselves for the things that make you human and who you are. So what if you decided to eat a candy bar. It’s totally okay, that one candy bar is not going to derail everything. It’s okay to be human and it’s okay to fall down sometimes. It’s taken me a long time to accept that. I tend to be a bit of a type A and be a bit of a control freak, but sometimes you just have to let it all go. Do not think that you are not good enough for someone because 9 times out of 10, you’re too good for them.  If you have to change your standards and beliefs to be accepted, it’s not worth it.
You are amazing. Maybe I don’t know all of you personally or if I did, maybe we’re not so close anymore, but be amazing, be the change and do it for you.
Just remember that you are strong, amazing, and unstoppable.

Shameless Food Pushing

I’ve never really believed in food in bar form…. I’ve always said that if God had intended for food to be in bar form he would have made it that way. I’ve mostly stayed with this philosophy, sometimes eating a KIND bar, but never really giving into that protein bar craze. Until now.
This is a Quest Bar and the cookie dough flavor just changed my life. Like, for real. Sorry that it's half eaten.

I had read about them on other blogger’s sites and decided the other day that I would give in and try one. Like I said, life changing. Mainly because they don’t taste like your average protein bar, you know, like chalk. Plus, you can nibble on this bad boy all day and it still tastes great.
I’m just impressed. Product pushingly impressed. I don’t normally product push, yeah I drink my advocare Sparks and I swear by them but this is FOOD…. And it tastes like a fricken cookie.
Okay, Quest Bar excitement over… for now…. Until I find another flavor I like. Muhahahahaha….
I try to watch my language on here but can I just say that yesterday was Hell. Pure and total hell. I am a firm believer that full moons and 3 day weekends bring out the crazies. Regardless, I put on my big girl panties and a freakishly scary smile and was chipper all day, but all I really wanted was to have someone wash my hair and tell me that I’m great.
On a side note… for everyone who reads my blog, Thank you. I have had a couple people tell me recently that they read this and it just brightens my day. I started this blog for my own piece of mind and now I have people to take the journey with me. There are days that I feel alone and then someone tells me that they’ve read my blog, it just makes my day.

...like a Kardashian.

From the time I was 5 years old to at least 21, I wanted one thing: to be a movie star. I love acting, I love art and all of the technical aspects of the theatre and movies. It wasn’t until I was older that I realized that Hollywood was a challenge and it was primarily smoke and mirrors, nothing was as it appeared to be.

I spent my Saturday morning doing something I never thought I’d do…. Watching the Kardashians. To be completely honest I’ve never really cared for them, they have too much money for their own good but I learned a few things from them during the 5 hours (that I’ll never get back) invested in them: fame is dangerous. You pay an awful price for being famous; your privacy. Sure, I get on here and broadcast my personal opinions and thoughts but it’s not something I wouldn’t say out loud if given the chance. People like the Kardashians can’t even sit on their porch in the morning and enjoy their coffee in their pajamas, looking disheveled, without someone capturing it on camera. I couldn’t live like that.
However, if there is one thing to admire about the Kardashians it’s their drive. These women just don’t take “no” for an answer and that’s admirable. In a sense, I want to be like them. I want to believe that I can do anything, take no prisoners and be unstoppable.
Meanwhile, this happened at my nephew's first birthday
My baby has hair!!!
And some people can't cut it at the Memorial Day cookout!

Observations

There are so many things on my mind today but first let me start with a big HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY to my nephew, Levi. He’s such a bright light in our lives and watching him and McKenna grow up together is the biggest blessing!

There has been a lot of emphasis on bullying in the news lately and I’d just like to touch on my own experiences and observations. Children can be cruel, Teenagers are heinous, but nothing beats a jealous adult. Nothing.  You see, some people never truly grow up and learn that in order to be happy, you have to stop wishing for what others have. I was an unusual kid, an awkward teenager, but I’ve never felt more alienated than by miserable adults who believe that everyone should bow to them in all of their made up glory. They will make you miserable for their happiness.

Forgive me but I’m reminded of a quote from “Mean Girls” that sums just about everything you need to know about life and bullying up: “Calling somebody else fat won't make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn't make you any smarter. And ruining Regina George's life definitely didn't make me any happier. All you can do in life is try to solve the problem in front of you.”
Bullys don’t go away; they just grow into liars, manipulators, and narassistic fools. And that kids, is my PSA for today!

Getting Sparked and Slammed

“We should not judge people by their peak of excellence; but by the distance they have traveled from the point where they started.”
Henry Ward Beecher
Kudos to Goodreads for that amazing quote.
This is something that I have to take to heart most days…. My progress is not going to be the same as others. I have made progress and that’s something, I make mistakes every day and I’m not ashamed because we are all human and God made us to make mistakes.

I have recently started using some of the Advocare products, mainly Spark and Slam, and after 2 days I can say that they do exactly what they advertise… give you energy. It’s 6:21 in the morning and I’m ready to take on the whole Empire myself. (Where my Star Wars fans at???)

Last night I worked my “hell shift,” as I lovingly call it, 6a-730p and it made me realize that I NEED to get some exercise in and maybe I won’t be dragging my feet behind me after a day like that. Over the past couple of months I’ve just been changing the way I eat and drink but now it’s time to kick it up a notch. I know that if I start exercising just 3 days a week, I’ll see results. (Oh the joys of still being considerably “young”). So I’m calling out to my friends and acquaints, I need an exercise partner. Someone who will push me to my limits and not let me give up.
Recently, I’ve been working to find my balance. Finding balance is a difficult thing, especially when you’re a full time mom, wife, and employee. (Not saying that if you’re not those things, you can find balance… this is just my dilemma) I want to be a great mother, a great wife, and a stand up employee while focusing on my health, it’s just difficult sometimes and I feel like I’m neglecting something or someone. Any tips of the trade for this little thing called balance??

Before and After

The time has come… I can finally release a before and after pic. After making small changes in my life, I can finally see a difference. It’s not a big difference and I still have a long way to go but things are changing and I’m a little giddy!

The reason I’ve been making these changes is not only for me but for this little face right here:

My sweet girl weighs 12lbs!! She’s doing so well… I just can’t believe it sometimes.
I have not stepped on the scale… I’m just going on how my clothes fit. I’ve been drinking lots of water and doing my best to stay away from fast food (I have my moments of weakness) LOL and zero alcohol. Like I said, I’ve not made any BIG changes or deprived myself… I’ve just changed things.

Anyho, among my many changes, I’ve been trying attempting to simplify my life and one major thing I’ve done is to quit worrying about designers. I used to be a designer snob… big time. My makeup bag used to be filled with anything and everything you can find at Sephora but I’ve found that drug store makeup does just fine… especially since I’ve been wearing less of it. If I can get a coupon for it out of the Sunday paper, I’ll use it. I’m a big fan of ELF and Rimmel, some of my basics:

That minute maid stuff…. AHMAZING. It makes my water taste like the Bahamas.
Well that’s it, not a big post but it’s full of updates.

It's been a MONTH!!!!

*SIGH* It’s been a month. AN ENTIRE MONTH.

It’s been a month of NCAA championship shattered dreams, new hair, spark, McKenna’s first Easter and a dip in pant sizes…. (Fan girl scream)

My baby is getting so big!! At the doctor she weighed 8lbs and 10 ounces!!! So far from the 2lbs and 6 ounces she started at. I’m so proud of my baby and as my very first mother’s day approaches, I can’t help but be super excited. Hopefully Hubs has been paying attention to those little hints I’ve been passing around.

Little known fact about me: I only step on the scale when I’m forced.. (i.e. doctor’s apts) and I’ll explain why. A few years ago I lost around 40lbs… the wrong way… and was obsessed with the scale. Obsessed. So obsessed that it hindered my weight loss so I vowed to never step on the scale for my own personal pleasure again, it complicates things. Because of this, I can only base weight loss on the fit of my clothes and I like it this way.

Let’s talk about my new friend, spark. SOOOO glad I found this stuff; it’s like a red bull without the nasty cough syrup taste and coffee without the fattening cream. I will say that the only problem with spark that I have is that it’s so darn expensive. I really like it but I don’t think I can pay for it all the time so I’m trying to stretch my stash.

I’m sorry that I’ve been lazy in writing, there are days that I feel like I need 15 hands and feet to get things accomplished.

Mrs. Troll and the Zyrtec Fairy

This is what a troll on a 6-day coke binge looks like:
Just for the record: This is me and NO, I have not been on a 6-day coke binge, I just have a wicked sense of humor. I had a severe allergy attack that started on Friday and has just now started to clear up. So a note to everyone: its allergy season, take your Zyrtec or you’ll end up like Mrs. Troll up there.
This is what 2 steroid shots, 1 oral antibiotic, 1 shot antibiotic, 55 dollar eye drops, 5 dollar ear drops, lots of water and rest looks like 4 days later…. I still am a ways off from looking normal again but I’m getting there.
So I apologize for my lack of communication with the outside world. I was having difficulty seeing anything.
Ohh and it snowed... Yes, snowed in TN yesterday. It's supposed to be spring. Grr
On the plus side…. According to my latest doctor visit, my blood pressure was perfect and since my last visit at the end of February, I’ve lost 8 lbs!! If I hadn’t felt so miserable, I would have done a big happy dance for that!
And to end... Here's a picture of Nugget with her favorite Aunt/babysitter, Abby! This pic is just too cute not to share!

She's got the "angles."

The “Myspace” (is Myspace even relevant anymore?) angles.
We are all guilty. As a matter of fact, I took a shameless myspace angle selfie this morning in the office. I wish I could say it was just a chick thing but then I’d be a shameless, myspace angle, selfie taking liar. I’ll pause and give you an example of the selfie.. as if you don’t already know…..

The real question is why we feel the need to hold the camera up and to the right to get our “good side?” Most people know what we look like and know that this amazing picture of us is taken at a certain angle anyways… I am just as guilty as everyone else and I will probably continue taking shameless selfies but at least I’m putting it out there.
All that being said, my life style change has had a very slow start. I’ll admit it. However, I’ve cut out cokes entirely and I’m relying on water and coffee to get me through the day and I’m continuing to plan my meals out. I know that things won’t change over night (or at least I keep telling myself that--- I’m a very inpatient person so it’s eating me alive) but I also know that things won’t change unless I change.
Over the years I’ve tried many diets and diet pills… not this time… with my blood pressure being dangerously high I can’t take the diet pills like I used to so this is all me this time. No magic shakes, or pills or any “fad” that you can think of. I’m going to be honest with myself and my readers, thank you all for your support-btw. I’m going to share my triumphs and failures with you along with my frustration and humor.
Now to tie in my myspace selfie rant, which is what I was taught during my many years doing speech competitions, I promise no smoke and mirrors. No myspace selfies. Just me, doing this the old fashioned way with no pills, “shakes,” surgery or bands.  Just me. And a blog. And maybe a few shameless baby pictures of Nugget and food.

Warning Signs.

In honor of my due date and the amazing health of Nugget, I am going to post some of the warning signs that you need to look out for in Preeclampsia and HELLP Syndrome.

Preeclampsia
No Symptoms
Preeclampsia is a serious condition of pregnancy, and can be particularly dangerous because many of the signs are silent while some symptoms resemble “normal” effects of pregnancy on your body.  Many women suffering from preeclampsia don’t feel sick, and may be surprised or become frustrated when they are admitted to the hospital or prescribed bed rest since they still feel well.
High blood pressure is an important sign of preeclampsia. The disease is sometimes referred to as a silent killer because most people can’t “feel” their blood pressure going up.  As a result, patient awareness of the warning signs is one of the most important tools we have to successfully help women receive the care they need. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with signs and symptoms included here to empower yourself and/or others during pregnancy.
What you can do...
Proper prenatal care is essential so don’t miss your appointments. Weighing in, checking your blood pressure and testing your urine for protein, each important for detecting preeclampsia, should take place at every prenatal visit. Do not be afraid to question your caregiver if any of these tests are omitted.
A good prenatal diet full of vitamins, minerals and the basic food groups are important for any pregnancy, as is reducing consumption of processed foods, refined sugars and caffeine. Eliminating alcohol and any medication not prescribed by a physician is essential. Report all medications prescribed by other doctors to your prenatal care provider so that these products can be checked regarding their safe use during pregnancy. Speak with your health care professional before taking any nutritional supplement – herbal or otherwise. Although there is no evidence that these healthy behaviors and choices impact preeclampsia, they do optimize your health for the best pregnancy possible.

Hypertension (High blood pressure)   (CHECK)
High blood pressure is traditionally defined as blood pressure of 140/90 or greater, measured on two separate occasions six hours apart. This is one of the most important indicators that preeclampsia may be developing. However, during pregnancy, a rise in the diastolic (lower number) of 15 degrees or more, or a rise in the systolic (upper number) of 30 degrees or more might be cause for concern, warranting closer observation, even though it is not, by itself, a criterion for preeclampsia. This relative rise may have added significance if you have other symptoms of the disease, as well.
What you can do...
Know your blood pressure prior to pregnancy, particularly if it is normally considered low.  Ask, "What is my blood pressure?" during each visit with your health care provider.
You can buy your own blood pressure monitor at most pharmacies, and some of these stores have a monitor available for your use, though these are not always reliable. Keep a log of your blood pressure, taken at the same time each day and in the same position. For accuracy, blood pressure readings should be taken in a sitting position, with the cuff positioned on the left arm at the level of the heart. Share your log with your health care provider at each visit.
If you own your own monitor, have it calibrated with those used in the provider’s office. If you are monitoring your pressures elsewhere, notify your healthcare provider immediately should you find any significant rise.
Please note that home monitors are not always as accurate as those used in clinics or hospitals. Home readings should therefore not replace prenatal visits, nor should a "normal" reading mean you can ignore other symptoms of preeclampsia.
If you are diagnosed with preeclampsia, many health care providers will recommend bed rest, even though evidence has not shown it to make a difference in outcomes. Some believe this helps limit potential stressors that could contribute to elevated blood pressures. During late pregnancy, it may be suggested that you lie on your left side, because lying flat on your back might cause the pregnant uterus (and the weight of the baby) to restrict the vein that supplies the heart. Lying flat on your back may also make it difficult for your kidneys to excrete salt, which could lead to further swelling and also increases in your blood pressure. Health care providers do not always agree on the benefits of lying on one’s side, but there is no evidence of harm.
If you’ve had preeclampsia previously, or if you have chronic high blood pressure, it may be preferable to be cared for by a specialist in high-risk OB, such as a maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialist, or when such care is not readily available, to choose a physician who readily consults with such experts or with internists specializing in hypertension during pregnancy. A resource that can help you locate an MFM near you who focuses on care of hypertensive diseases in pregnancy is the Physician Locator tool on the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine’s website. All these situations are highly variable and are best discussed first with your primary caregiver.

Proteinuria (Protein in your urine)    (CHECK—well after 2 24 hour urines)
Proteinuria, another sign of preeclampsia, is the result of proteins, normally confined to the blood by the filtering role of your kidney, spilling into your urine. This is because preeclampsia temporarily damages this “filter.” A simple dipstick test of your urine at each prenatal check-up can screen for proteinuria, though more sophisticated equipment that can be set up in clinics and medical offices may be used in the future.
What you can do...
During each prenatal visit, ask your health care provider for the results of your urine test. A nurse will have dipped a reagent strip into a sample of your urine. A reading of trace protein is relatively common and is usually not a cause for concern. However, if the reading is 1+ or greater, it may signify the onset of preeclampsia, even if your blood pressure is below 140/90.  If you are concerned, or have had preeclampsia before, you can buy reagent strips at some pharmacies or online. Should you record a reading of 2+ or greater at home, call your health care provider that very same day.
Sometimes health care providers will have you collect your urine for 24-hours to determine the exact quantity of protein in the urine. While this is not a particularly convenient task, be sure to follow your provider’s directions and make every effort to be accurate.
Dark yellow urine is usually the result of low fluid intake and may be associated with dehydration. However, urine that looks dark, reddish or the color of cola may indicate a problem. If you observe this, contact your health care provider.

Edema (Swelling)   (BIG CHECK)
A certain amount of swelling is normal during pregnancy. For example, your feet may swell making it difficult to wear your regular shoes throughout pregnancy. Edema is the accumulation of excess fluid, and is more of concern when it is observed in the face, around the eyes, or hands.
What you can do...
If you feel your face is getting excessively puffy, find a picture of yourself from just before pregnancy to share with your health care provider. If the swelling in your extremities becomes severe, you may notice “pitting edema” (when you press your thumb into your skin, an indentation remains for a few seconds) or discoloration of your legs. If you suspect pitting edema, notify your health care provider, put your feet up every day (but avoid sitting for extended periods).

Headaches  (CHECK)
Dull or severe, throbbing headaches, often described as migraine-like that just won't go away are cause for concern.
What you can do...
If you have tried taking over-the-counter medication without relief, if the headache is very painful, you have light sensitivity, or if your headache is accompanied by vision changes (please read the section below on "Changes in Vision") call your provider immediately and ask to see him/her that day

Nausea or Vomiting    (Didn’t realize this was a CHECK until much later.)
Nausea or vomiting is particularly significant when the onset is sudden and after mid-pregnancy. “Morning sickness” should disappear after the first trimester and the sudden appearance of nausea and vomiting after mid pregnancy may be linked to preeclampsia.
What you can do...
Call your care provider. Nausea or vomiting can be confused with the flu or gallbladder problems, so insist on getting your blood pressure checked and checking your urine for proteinuria.

Abdominal (stomach area) and/or Shoulder Pain  (This was the biggest warning sign I had toward the end of my pregnancy)
This type of abdominal pain, often called epigastric pain or upper right quadrant (URQ) pain, is usually under the ribs on the right side. It can be confused with heartburn, gallbladder problems, flu, indigestion or pain from the baby kicking. Shoulder pain is often called “referred pain” because it radiates from the liver under the right ribs. Lower back pain is different from muscle strain common to pregnancy, because it is usually more acute and specific. Shoulder pain can feel like someone is deeply pinching you along the bra strap or on your neck, or it can be painful to lie on your right side. All of these pain symptoms may be a sign of HELLP Syndrome or a related problem in the liver.
What you can do...
Pain in this area should be taken very seriously; do not dismiss it and go to bed. Call your health professional immediately.

Lower Back Pain   (CHECK)
Lower back pain is a very common complaint of pregnancy. However, sometimes it may indicate a problem with the liver, especially if it accompanies other symptoms of preeclampsia.
What you can do...
Read also Stomach and Right Shoulder Pain (above) and mention this symptom to your health care provider. If this pain accompanies one or more of the other symptoms, you should call your health care provider immediately.

Sudden Weight Gain (Amazingly enough, I didn’t gain a pound while pregnant)
Weight gain of more than 2 pounds in a week may be an indicator of preeclampsia. Damaged blood vessels allow more water to leak into and stay in your body's tissue and not to pass through the kidneys to be excreted.
What you can do...
Do not try to lose weight during pregnancy by restricting your diet. Eating a healthy, balanced diet, including fresh raw fruit and vegetables, your prenatal vitamin, and a folic acid supplement is important for all pregnancies. Avoid excessive salt. Prior to getting pregnant, achieve a healthy weight (a BMI of 30 or less) since obesity has been shown to increase the chances of getting preeclampsia.
Given that preeclampsia is a complex disease, women will develop it for different reasons. A healthy, balanced diet and optimal weight may make a significant difference for some women. However, we urge caution when considering diets designed for weight-loss or claiming to prevent preeclampsia that encourage large amounts of protein. Excessive dietary protein may cause problems in women with underlying kidney disease.
Be sure to drink sufficient amounts of fluid, usually dictated by your normal thirst sensations, and to perform moderate amounts of exercise regularly. During your prenatal visits do not attempt to disguise weight gain by skipping breakfast, using diet pills or fasting for the day. An accurate weight is vital for a proper diagnosis.
The Preeclampsia Foundation recognizes the importance of a good diet, however we do not recommend any particular diet or juice product.

Changes in Vision  (NOPE)
Vision changes are amongst the most serious symptoms of preeclampsia, usually requiring immediate evaluation by a certified health care provider. Changes in vision may be associated with central nervous system irritation, or an indication of cerebral edema (general swelling of the brain). Vision changes include temporary loss of vision, sensations of flashing lights, auras, light sensitivity, and blurry vision or spots.
What you can do...
If you experience any of these changes in vision, you should contact your care provider immediately or go directly to the hospital. We stress that these symptoms are potentially very serious and they should not be left unattended to until the next morning, or particularly not until the end of the weekend. With preeclampsia, it is better to err on the side of caution, than to take a chance that might become life-threatening to you or your baby.

Hyperreflexia       (CHECK--- this played a major role later when deciding whether to deliver me or not)
Hyperreflexia is when your reflexes are so strong that when your knee is tapped by a rubber “hammer”, your leg bounces back hard. This sign is generally measured by a health care provider and otherwise difficult for you to observe yourself.

Racing pulse, mental confusion, heightened sense of anxiety, shortness of breath, sense of impending doom    (I was in the hospital for 10 days…. OF course I was sensing impending doom)
If these symptoms are new to you, they could indicate an elevated blood pressure, or more rarely, fluid collecting in your lungs (pulmonary edema).
What you can do...
Contact your health care provider if these symptoms are new. If these conditions are not new for you, be sure to mention them to your care provider during your next visit so he/she can monitor them throughout your pregnancy.
When we urge women to trust themselves, we are referring to the intuitive feeling that preeclamptic women often have that “something is not right.”  While these feelings may be nothing, it is important for women to report any concerns and for care providers to be diligent, particularly if accompanied by other signs or symptoms.
The most important thing to remember is to never be afraid to call and discuss anything unusual with your caregiver. No matter how busy, he or she does not mind (or should not) being bothered for what at first may seem unimportant. The worst outcomes of preeclampsia are best avoided by early recognition.

HELLP Syndrome
  • H -- hemolysis (the breakdown of red blood cells)   (CHECK)
  • EL -- elevated liver enzymes   (CHECK)
  • LP -- low platelet count   (CHECK)

To make a long story short, these conditions are nothing to mess around with. I almost died, Nugget and I are very lucky to be alive. I want to educate you all in the seriousness of these; I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my worst enemy. Please, if you’re pregnant or are trying to get pregnant, check out these--- not to scare yourself but to educate yourself and know the warning signs. If I had known then what I know now, I don’t know if things would have turned out differently but I would have been better equipped to handle it. Perhaps one day I will go into detail about everything that happened but for right now, I just want everyone who reads or will read my blog to take a moment and educate yourself in these conditions.
